Time to embark on a new writing adventure! I’m keeping a tumblelog called The Chicktionary, which uses the Tumblr platform. It’s perfect for a wannabe memoirist. I can record all the boring, inconsequential happenings of daily life and also insert random musings/epiphanies without feeling like a long entry is necessary. This is the sort of journal that’s going to come in handy years from now when I look back at college. And I highly recommend Tumblr for the amateur blogger. It’s functional and easy. If you’re interested in the new blog, subscribe to The Chicktionary via email or feed .
A lot of people have been asking me why I’m still blogging if I shut down Sex and the Ivy. I guess the simple answer is that “blogging” was never the problem; it was blogging about sex, specifically, that got me attention and got me in trouble. By the end of 2007, I wasn’t even sharing much about my sex or love life anymore and a lot of my writing was very impersonal. I really like writing about relationships and I have plenty of opinions I’d like to share about sex. But if I’m going to write about those sorts of topics, I want to really write about them and not ignore the ugly details or the parts that make me seem vulnerable. I put up a brave front nowadays because I face a lot more criticism than before, but until I re-learn how to let my guard down, I’d rather not write on these subjects at all rather than write half-honestly.
So personal update: I’m currently hiding out in my blockmates’ off-campus apartment and I’m trying to keep a low-profile to recuperate from a pretty tumultuous December. My best friend Kennedy is off to Germany for the spring semester and I only have one more week left to hang out with her, though we’re both insanely busy from exams. I’m spending the last week of January in Switzerland with my friends Cooper, Tiffanie, Tara, and Ned. Harvard’s new semester starts immediately afterward, I have no Valentine as of yet (though I’m experiencing my first crush in ages), and I’ll be in New York for President’s Day in Feb. In the meantime, I’m freelancing a lot and there will be updates to this website whenever I get a new press mention or a piece published.
As always, if you want to get in touch, I’m at elle at sexandtheivy dot com and I am now 60% of the way through my enormous batch of holiday email! If I don’t get to yours by February, you are totally allowed to re-email and yell at me virtually. For now at least, comments aren’t enabled on my Tumblr, not because I don’t want reader feedback, but because I think it’s best that I don’t write specifically FOR feedback.
Oh, and I’ve been donning the same self-deprecating tee (pictured above) since Sunday. Hey, fashion can be the silver lining to anything, even an Internet sex scandal.
